The European knightly sword, or arming sword, is one of the most famous blades from the medieval period. The double-edged, one-handed sword became a defining tool for men-at-arms and knights in the 11th through 15th centuries. The form, including the cruciform silhouette, pommel, and crossguard, had practical, religious, and cultural associations throughout the continent. They became a symbolic part of chivalry, status, ceremony, knighthood, and the medieval warrior. Individual blades could vary, but the foundations remained the same.
 
Earlier swords were more limited to either cutting or thrusting, but didn't always do both. As armor changed and war evolved, the knightly sword provided both thrusting ability and cutting power.
