David was once a metalworker, but now he searches for scrap metal the way others hunt for food. When it comes to keeping his fellow survivors armed, he is the man. Even if nobody really understands him. Today, his mission is a scrapyard pile near the old shipping container office. A horde is banging on the steel sides. David scowls. Those things are standing on a prime stack of steel.
He climbs up on the old crane and swings the giant wrecking ball in a wide arc, toppling the horde like bowling pins into a muddy pit. Nice. He climbs back out and pulls out his sword, using it to pry up the first steel sheet. The office door slowly opens. Four terrified survivors blink in the sunlight, confused as to why the pounding stopped. A woman reaches out and touches David's arm, but he draws it back.
"Thank you for saving us, sir."
David cocks his head. "Saved you? I came for the steel." He frowns and points. "Grab some metal and follow me."
The survivors look at each other and shrug, grabbing as much as they can carry. David is pleased. Best haul all week.
