Twenty years of dropping pines can come in handy in the apocalypse. Ron swings the axe, turning the door into a memory with three clean hits. He squeezes through and heads to the pharmacy. He stuffs his sack with antibiotics and other meds and slungs it over his shoulder. Hearing a sound, he ducks behind the counter and slowly looks over the top.
 
Five raiders meet his gaze, and he smirks as he says, "Welp. Guess I'm taking the back door."
 
He runs the other way, jumping out the back door as raiders crash through the pharmacy behind him. He skids to a stop at the dead oak tree barely standing at the edge of the lot, slams his axe into it twice, and yells "Timber!" as the trunk slams down. He jogs for the hidden manhole that will take him to the Underground and disappears.

How do I care for my axe?

1. Wipe the 65Mn steel blade with a soft, dry cloth after handling. Fingerprints carry moisture and salts.
2. Apply a thin coat of protective oil every few weeks, more often in humid climates. Carbon steel rusts if neglected, and the worn finish won't stop new rust.
3. Don't store it in its imitation leather cover for long periods in damp places, since a cover can trap moisture against the blade.
4. Check now and then that the rope-wrapped handle is snug, and stop handling it if anything feels loose.
